Let’s talk pruning and reduction
What we’ve come to expect of tree pruning and what’s necessary is often two quite different things.
Our approach favours the least-intrusive intervention. We prune and reduce the canopy when it is justified by safety, tree health, or long-term structure. We focus on risk reduction, structural pruning of young trees, storm recovery, and targeted habitat enhancement.
We use modern rope-access climbing techniques predominantly to work any part of the tree with minimal impact. These low-impact methods allow us to work without injury to the tree and reach great heights with safety. There are specific situations where using an elevated platform is a better option, such as structurally unsound tree or disruptive to aerial plantings or wildlife.
Avoiding Needless Pruning
Current arboricultural standards reinforce that the best pruning is often the least. Minimal, well-timed cuts protect the tree’s physiological function, lower client costs, and avoid unnecessary major surgery.
Reducing Risk
Pruning to reduce risk is based on targeted, evidence-led cuts rather than wholesale branch removal. Small reductions at branch tips can decrease end-weight and windage, shift a stem’s center of mass closer to the trunk, and often mitigate hazards without increasing overall instability.
Structural Pruning for Young Trees
Early, modest intervention on young trees — selective leader training and scaffold selection — prevents costly remedial work later. Developing good structure from the start reduces future failure potential while preserving natural form where appropriate.
Rebuilding After Damage
Trees can and do recover from storm damage. Epicormic (sprout) growth indicates the tree’s effort to restore leaf area; with time and considered pruning, these shoots can be guided into durable branches. We prioritise long-term recovery strategies over immediate, large cuts.
Wildlife & Habitat-Focused Pruning
Trees are habitat structures. Where ecologically appropriate, we retain deadwood, cavities, and structural complexity, and employ pruning techniques that encourage wildlife use. Habitat management is always site-specific and balanced against safety and tree health. If active nests or protected species are present, work is deferred until it is safe to proceed.
